Rhythmic Sounds

My sisters,

As we gather in joy, in celebration, in shared passion, something deeper has been stirring within us. You may have felt it the shift, the rise, the pulse moving through your body like something awakened. For some, it is familiar. For others, it arrives as a question: why do I feel both restless and alive, both grounded and unable to come down from this energy?

This is not by chance. This is design. This is inheritance.

Weeks before this moment, the drums were already speaking. Across the islands, through Santo Antão, Festa of Santo António, through every celebration of the Tubarão Azul Soccer Team the rhythm was carried. And the diaspora answered. Across oceans, we joined in spirit, and something powerful began to build.

With every beat, love was released.

As the drums call us, our bodies remember. The hips begin to sway, side to side, awakening something sacred within us. The womb stirs. The legs follow, feet rooted firmly to the ground, like a tree spreading its roots. We ground, we release, we connect.

Then the rhythm rises.

It travels upward, through the legs, into the belly, into the chest, until it pours through the arms and out of the fingertips. The body becomes an instrument. The heart opens. The hands may tap the chest, the breath deepens, the face softens, and a smile, effortless and radiant, spreads, carrying joy outward.

Dopamine, yes. But more than that, memory.

And then, the crown opens.

Now you are no longer just dancing, you are connected. Fully. Completely. Immersed. Every whistle shifts your direction, every beat fuels your movement. What feels like a long journey happens in seconds. The body aligns. Energy flows. You become a living rhythm, a vessel of power and release.

So why does it linger?

Because we have shifted something real. The mind races because it is trying to understand what the body already knows. We feel alive because we have tapped into something ancient, but the body cannot hold this intensity forever.

And so, we must return to calm.

Find stillness. Breathe deeply through your nose. Let each breath travel, up through your third eye, to your crown, down your spine, into your feet, rising again through your womb, your heart, and out through your mouth. Slow it down. Five minutes. Ten minutes. Let the rhythm soften, like a drum fading in the distance, like a whistle carried by the wind, like the ocean settling after a wave.

Or return to the water. Salt, our oldest healer, will hold you, calm you, restore you.

What we are experiencing is not new.

It is ancestral.

A calling that has lived within us for generations. Something our bodies remember even when our minds do not. A gift passed down through love, through our grandparents, through our lineage, through every gathering, every drum, every whistle of the shell “conch”, every dance.

We are not just celebrating.

We are remembering.

And as we continue these traditions, let us honor them for what they are, an imprint on our souls. A reminder that we are stronger together. That our energy travels beyond us, across oceans, through mountains, echoing in places we may never see but will always belong to.

We are Kriolas.

And we carry the rhythm within us.
